A Narayanganj court today sentenced 26 persons including main accused Nur Hossain, dismissed RAB officials Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander SM Masud Rana to death in sensational seven-murder trial.

“Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Syed Enayet Hossain pronounced the short judgement at around 10.10 am in crowded courtroom. The court also sentenced nine other convicts to different terms in jail,” a court official said.

Earlier in the morning police produced 23 accused before the court. Of the 23, 18 were brought from Narayanganj jail, while others including Nur and sacked armyman Tareque Sayeed were brought from Kashimpur High Security Jail.

“We are very happy and want quick execution of the verdict,” said advocate Sakhawat Hossain, the main counsel for the complainant in the murder case, told the newsmen.

Slain word counselor Nazrul Islam’s widow Selina Islam Beauty too expressed relief over the verdict, hoping the apex court would upheld the judgment.

“I would like to express my gratitude to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the judgement,” she added.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam yesterday said he expects the court to hand the accused in sensational seven-murder case exemplary punishment.

“The people, who were involved in that pre-planned act, were designated to safeguard the lives, freedom and properties of the citizens. So their crimes are unforgivable,” he said.

Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Court on November 30, 2016, set today for judgement after a prolonged hearing in the case.

Narayanganj City Corporation councilor Nazrul Islam along with his three aides and driver were kidnapped allegedly by a team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-11 on April 27 in 2014.

Besides, senior lawyer Chandan Sarker and his driver Ibrahim were also picked up by the same team as they witnessed the abduction of Nazrul and his associates.

Subsequently all the seven bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya river.

Two cases were filed in this connection — one by Nazrul’s family and the other by Chandan’s family.

Later, three RAB officials — Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander SM Masud Rana – were sacked from the services for their alleged involvement in the abduction and killing.

A total 35 people, including prime accused Nur Hossain and three sacked RAB officials, were indicted on February 8, 2016, in the killing case. Of the accused, 12 people remained absconding till today.
